Breastfeeding Awareness and Empowered Motherhood

August, 2023

For four years, Back To You has been growing from a one-woman doula business to a collective of local providers, offering many beautiful services to support and enhance your experience as you navigate early parenthood. Every woman we support reminds us how lucky we are to work with families like yours during these milestone moments - pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, postpartum recovery, and self-care that continues into motherhood. This summer, we held space for a handful of new mothers during their empowering births, successful lactation journeys, and in-home overnight care, and we welcomed many "less new" mothers into a new program called MomPods for mothers seeking a deeper connection with other mothers.

While we celebrate mothers all year round, the world doesn't always do such a great job honoring mothers’ contributions - so before we leave Summer behind, we are excited to show our support for August as World Breastfeeding Month!

August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month

I recently saw a post on Instagram that said "Breastfeeding for one year is approximately 1,800 hours. A full-time job with 3 weeks of vacation is 1,960 hours." If you consider moms who exclusively pump and then feed (and also clean the pump and bottle parts required to do this), their time commitment could come close to double the 1,800 hours. So, yes, we'd say it's about time we recognize the hard work and dedication of the breastfeeding mother. And while we do it for the myriad benefits it offers for mom and baby, we can all agree that breastfeeding mothers could use more support to make their breastfeeding journeys easier and perhaps even more fulfilling.

Back To You is passionate about providing this additional support, nurturing, and empowering mothers as they learn how to fit breastfeeding into their already overwhelming list of tasks and obligations. We also promote doing what's best for each mom, and sometimes that requires a different feeding approach. Making the right choices for each situation reflects a level of self-care that we stand behind wholeheartedly. But for those who are seeking to achieve a goal of breastfeeding, we celebrate you this month in particular. Click here to learn more about our online Breastfeeding 101 course.

Thoughts On “Empowered Motherhood

The word "empowered" seems to be thrown around a lot. The truth is - feeling empowered as a birther, mother, or caregiver means something different to each person. For some, it means having the confidence and knowledge to make informed decisions for their family. For others, it's about finding strength in vulnerability and embracing the imperfections that come with motherhood. At Back To You, we understand that empowered motherhood is not a one-size-fits-all concept; it's a deeply personal and evolving journey.

Let’s walk through this journey together.
