Class 3: Being Seen and Heard + Writing a Birth Plan

First, learn effective verbal communication strategies for making your preferences known to the many care providers you are likely to encounter during your perinatal experience. Learn how traditional care providers think and how policies guide protocols but what you can do to get your priorities heard and honored. Encourage cooperation from your OB and staff, your homebirth midwife, the shift nurses at the hospital, the rotating on-call physicians you’re meeting for the first time, and the anesthesiologist in the case of an epidural or C-section.

Next, learn how to write an effective birth plan. Examples, checklists, and advice are discussed so that you can determine what your birthing values are, how to prioritize them in a written plan, and how to articulate your wishes in a way that encourages the staff to work for you, not against you.

The tactics you will learn in this class will be effective for all doctor visits to come, whether they be OB appointments, pediatrician visits, or future medical appointments. You can also use this class to help you choose the right provider if you are still on the fence.

This class is 1 hour and 15 minutes and includes a short role play that many couples find helpful. It also includes the homework of creating a birth plan, along with example birth plans from real Back To You clients and articles about writing birth plans, to be done alone or with the Birth Partner.

“It’s actually the providers who are on the hot seat, not you. It is their job to explain what is going on. You get to sit back and ask all the questions you need.”
